Our History

It all started when…

Sandra had to comfort her daughter after a friend revealed her private status as transgender at a summer day camp. Sandra realized there were no summer day camps for her transgender daughter - or other gender diverse youth - to feel safe and affirmed in a fun community of other gender diverse youth.

Rainbow Day Camp and Camp Kickin' It opened in 2015 as a project of love by a parent - with an amazing board of trustees -  who sought inspiring and affirming spaces for her child and others to explore the whole spectrum of her identity and expression in a welcoming community. These camps are the first in the world organized around celebrating gender and welcomed  youth as young as 4 years old.

The camps are two innovative programs launched by enGender, a community-based 501c(3) non profit located in the San Francisco Bay Area. As our community has voiced other needs, enGender has responded to create other services and programming so our youth can reach their full human potential.
